We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

1891 census entry

Just spotted this entry in the 1891 census which made me smile. Richard Lewis Davis, a 38 year old grocer is listed as 'Much married'. I was puzzled by this until I saw the note in the 'infirmity' column which states Richard is, 'According to my wife deficient in common sense'. Richard Lewis Davis 1...

Re: Catholic baptism

Thanks for this additional information Jimbo50.
Nothing has come to light to suggest that Nora was in a hostel - but that doesn't mean that she wasn't.
Very interesting, thank you.

Re: Wills on GOV.UK

I believe that recent wills have been scanned on receipt and stored digitally for some years, so if you order one of those you will usually receive it very quickly. Older/historic wills that have never been requested before have to be retrieved from storage and scanned when someone orders a copy, s...

Wills on GOV.UK

I just ordered a will on GOV.UK website and it came through immediately!
It was a fairly recent one, for 2008. I ordered a couple of similar ones a few weeks ago and they arrived promptly but not on the click of the mouse!

Re: Catholic baptism

I can not find any baptism record for George Archibald nor for any of his siblings. I have presumed he was not Catholic. I have looked into George's birth family. Both his parents had died before he was 10 years old. Several siblings died as infants. One brother survived childhood but was killed in ...

Re: Catholic baptism

It appears to be a property a century ago. If you do a newspaper search for 271 Canongate (Edinburgh) you'll see there are a couple of mentions for this address in 1927 and 1928. One report refers to a child neglect case in May 1928. There's also a Feb 1927 death notice. Earlier in 1903: 271 Canong...

I was puzzled by this address too. Perhaps the buildings have been renumbered over the years?

Re: Catholic baptism

On FMP there's a 1902 record for a Charles Wilson in the Scotland Roman Catholic Parish Congregational Records collection. I'm unable to view the record as I don't have a sub. Just wanted to mention it, though. Sheila - Have you done any research into George Archibald? Do you think he could be the ...

Jimbo50 wrote: 05 Apr 2023, 15:37 Yes . I wonder if Charles Wilson died in 1950.
I thought you might be onto something with this but unfortunately not. Surprisingly there are only two deaths for a Charles Wilson around the right age in the whole of Scotland in 1950 and neither are the right man.

Re: Catholic baptism

So she marries George Archibald, but is referred to as widow of Charles Wilson when she dies. Very odd indeed. Whereabouts was she living in 1911 and 1921 onwards? Street addresses are especially helpful when searching for newspaper reports, etc. What were the occupations of Archibald and Wilson? I...
