We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Re: Irish marriage

You may have already looked in the place that I'm about to suggest because you mention various Irish records sites but here goes... On John Grenham's web-site there is a section for Roman Catholic records - it covers where to find them. I started with https://www.johngrenham.com/places/rcmap_index.p...

Re: Royal Engineers, WW2

Firstly, if if if you have the DC, then you can apply without their permission - you just won't get the full details until 25y have elapsed since the death. Since 1968 + 25 = 1993, then not only can you now apply without permission of the NoK, but you can now get the full details. So basically I rec...

Re: Royal Engineers, WW2

... Also, as I understand it, the detail in a service record given to a non-next of kin would be less than to the n-o-k but for the same fee? ... Not quite. The important things are (1) how long ago did the serviceman / woman die? and (2) does the applicant have the permission of the next-of-kin? I...

... I realise WW2 records are thin on the ground and I can't apply for his service record without knowing more. ... Sorry if you've talked about this before and I've forgotten - but why can't you apply for his service record without knowing more? You need his full name, proof of death, permission f...

Re: Silver badge/ khaki dockers

Not sure how much you know of this but... 1. I can't find any Service Papers for Thomas Tobin on FindMyPast. 2. He has two entries in Ancestry's UK, World War I Service Medal and Award Rolls, 1914-1920 - one for the "British War Medal and Victory Medal" Medal Roll and the other for the "1914 Star". ...

And are totally off limits to non-Church members.

Re: Find my Past subscriptions

My problem is that FamilySearch puts itself forward as being several things. One of those things is a software house whose ultimate aim, yes, is to support the compilation of Ordinances for the LDS Church. But as a software house it fails miserably to conform to basic software practices. For instanc...

Re: Ownership & Safe Keeping of Parish Registers

Thanks Guy. I noticed when I first went to Chester Record Office that, not only was there a logo outside for Cheshire RO itself but also a logo for the Chester Diocesan Record Office - that was the first time I realised that it was 2 in 1. That 1978 Act shows that this wasn't just a one-off for Ches...

Re: Find my Past subscriptions

There'll always be an overlap between the big 3 (Ancestry, FMP & FS - I discount Myheritage for UK purposes) and that overlap will grow as stuff comes out of its contracted periods of exclusivity. So you do need to check carefully what's available where. However, be very careful with FamilySearch - ...
