We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Re: How it Started, How it's Going
When people ask me how I became interested in family history it is easy to answer; “I was born.” That may sound facetious but in reality, my destiny was determined from day 1. I was given my mother’s maiden surname as my only forename, my brothers each had two forenames and my only sister four foren...

Re: 1921 census review
Not only is you suggestion wrong it is insulting! You obviously know nothing about the task involved and the facts behind the transcription. The National Archives put restrictions on the way the transcriptions were done which in itself reduced the accuracy of the transcriptions. Instead of the trans...

Re: 1921 census review
There were a lot of reorganisations of the Cheshire Regiment during the interwar period with regiments being disbanded and amalgamated etc. Perhaps he was temporarily stationed in Sheffield or even possibly (grasping at straws) in transit on HMS Sheffield (a light cruiser) though I have no idea when...

Re: 1921 Census amendments
It would be made by the checking clerks when the returns were being collated, I would also add it looks as if it was being amended to both dead but changed to father dead, so there was obviously some confusion whether one parent or both parents were deceased.

Re: 1921 census review
An interesting fact came to light today, after discussion with FMP over a problem with buying an original census record. The 1921 census was transcribed in India. Presumably a matter of cost. The GDPR (General Data Processing Regulation) doesn't apply outside Europe. The reason why FMP may be cost ...

Re: 1921 census review
... By the way I would not shout too much about data protection regulations, as there is no time limit imposed, the 100 years is non statutory and could easily be extended to 500 years if it was thought wise to do so. ;) ... Of course, that works in both directions and since the limit is slightly a...

Re: 1921 census review
A rather disturbing description of how the transcription was done appears on https://www.findmypast.co.uk/help/articles/4415870561041-how-was-the-1921-census-transcribed- . It says: When transcription of the 1921 Census of England and Wales took place, each digital image had to be broken up into se...

Re: 1921 census review
What errors have you found in the images, any or none? I will take note of you comment when you produce a similar sized data set with no errors. It is often the case that many of those who complain have never attempted to produce something similar. Cheers Guy I spent 16 minutes looking for my grand...

Re: 1921 census review
Whilst the website did not crash there are so many errors and data not entered, not surprised as this is what the private sector does. What errors have you found in the images, any or none?
