We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Enlistment Query

I wonder if any military buffs can advise on the following, as I have no great experience of tracking WWI family history. Is the following possible or likely? James Frederick WRIGHT was killed on the Western Front in 1916. He was in the 32nd battalion (East Ham) of the Royal Fusiliers and was born c...

Re: Find my Past subscriptions

The point regarding FMP is that they have purchased databases from different sources that contain the same records, hence why multiple entries can occur for a single event. They don't weed out duplications, nor should they, as the transcriptions themselves can have variants. I'm doing a single name ...

Re: Ownership & Safe Keeping of Parish Registers

Thank you very much for that, Guy. I felt you were the man with the skill to uncover the detail and very much appreciate the time you used in doing so. I've not had chance yet to do other than scan through the links, but it find it fascinating nevertheless.

Re: Find my Past subscriptions

Interesting. So are we saying that all record offices and archives are merely holding these documents on behalf of a church whilst carrying no legal requirement as to their care themselves, or are they doing that solely as Diocesan Record Offices, and does the Church of England contribute financiall...

Re: Find my Past subscriptions

Sorry Guy, a misunderstanding of your response to Adrian B. I thought you were referring to the ordinances of the LDS throughout. My reference on that basis was to the numerous trees constructed based using the original Computer File Index information which generally ignored burial data, which in tu...

Re: Find my Past subscriptions

Guy, that is also why the original CFI and later IGI ignored deaths and burials and why so many ordinances are therefore based on inaccurately constructed family trees. Surely, trying to prove a line of descent and constructing a family tree are exactly the same exercise whether it is being conducte...

Re: Census 2021

I found the most disappointing thing from a family history viewpoint is that they didn't request a specific place of birth. On its own, I doubt it will be very useful to future family historians, nor do I expect many of the myriad databases that the government are considering to supersede censuses e...

It is spelt Crowle in that document, which may be the reason it baffles.

Re: Online GRO Indexes Queries Raised

Indeed, Adrian but it only takes people to put postems based on info from certificates onto FreeBMD to overcome that and make it if not more useful, as useful. We shouldn't really though be having to discuss the deficiencies of a publicly funded, government run system, unfit for purpose. Those respo...

Re: Online GRO Indexes Queries Raised

drianBruce - I just wrote a lengthy and detailed reply to you that just disappeared after pressing "Preview"! Time wasted. However, it won't move the debate on. Quite simply the reality is that the people tasked with creating and maintaining the indexes are patently not up to the job. Thos...
