We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Future of the Census
The article in the September issue of WDYTYA? Magazine raises what the future of the Census could look like. I should say at the outset that this will only cover 'England and Wales' including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. For the last 30 years social scientists have been saying that the C...

Long Lost Family tv programme on lost identities 14.8.2023
I think we have all heard of the terrible treatment that went on in Ireland in the homes run by nuns until quite recently (the 1970s) and they way they treated unmarried mothers, Apparently there are about 30,000 birth entries which have the false names entered even though it had been illegal to put...

Re: Army service records
Currently TNA have just over 22,000 open files (including those who Christian names are "unspecified") on their catalogue but 161,000 closed records in series WO 423 covering 'Other Ranks' and Nurses.

Re: POW records
... TNA don't care about researchers but make researchers pay for access to the records, shameful. I've said it before and I'll carry on saying it - those who want free access to historical data via websites never answer the question about how to pay the IT personnel who create and maintain the web...

Adoption records in Scotland
This is the week for leaks it would appear. I don't agree that names of adopted people more than 100 years ago should be redacted, it is no worse than the images of the births of illegitimate children 100 years ago (our grandfather was one in 1893). What possible harm could it do in 2023?, I agree m...

Re: POW records
TNA have said to me today that "This series has been digitised as part of an agreement with Ancestry; they have created the metadata and scanned the images. It is therefore their data and, in such cases, the metadata does not migrate to Discovery." TNA don't care about researchers but make...

POW records
TNA have decided that the prisoner of war interviews (WO 344) from the Second World War which were transcribed by TNA volunteers should be made available ONLY through ancestry and not on TNA's Discovery catalogue. Why??.

Re: Army service records
I can't recall the address but there was no mention of such an incident on his file.

FOI requests
I have discovered from TNA's Annual Report (buried on their website!) that their compliance with dealing with FOI requests has dropped from 78% to 62%, they say they have had a lot of requests for the Second World War Army service records. Not good.

Yesterday I viewed the Second World War service file at TNA of Stanley Imeson, also stated to be Manfred Stanley Imerson (WO 423/119896: [1939-1963]: Name: S Imeson. Service number: 220535715. Date of birth: 4 December 1906. This is the second time the details in the file do not match other sources....
