We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Re: Ditto

Basic rule of transcribing write wht you see not what you think it should be.

Yes you may think the name should be the name given on the line above, but then pedants would complain it was not a true transcript.

Re: 1921 Census redactions

Any person who appears on any census and is still alive can ask their information be redacted, this is the standard position, nothing new.

Re: Storage of documents

First thing to do is to forget about the white gloves, they have caused as much damage to fragile documents as they have saved. Best policy is to wash your hands and dry thoroughly before handling your documents and repeat often throughout the process. If at all possible store documents flat where p...

Re: WDYTYA - 9 November - Pixie Lott

I would suggest it was handled in a reasonably sensitive manner as if it was flattened on a desk, it would have strained the binding more than being partially opened. Though I do agree balancing on one’s knee could have allowed it to be dropped.

Re: 1921 census release

The pricing of the 1921 is slightly less than the 1939 Register and less than the 1911 census when they were first released in spite of higher costs. Perhaps it is time those who complain about online costs compared the online charge to travelling the National Archives to view the census free of cha...

Re: Don't believe the indexes

I disagree with your "The false entry is still on the GRO indexes, one would hope that GRO would not produce the certificate to anyone.". The GRO have a legal duty to provide a certificate of the event. The Relevant law being the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1953. “30, (2) Any perso...

Re: Buried without a Head Stone

You don't need maps, though these are obviously very helpful. Contact the cemetery office and ask for the grave plot number use the plot number to locate the grave. Most gravestones have the plot number engraved on them either on the side or even low down on the face. Use the plot numbers on any exi...

Re: New computer (SSD vs HDD)

Every time you read a file you are actually reading, clearing and re-writing a cell this process refreshes the stored charge in the DRAM cell. The reason for this is a read shares the stored charge in the capacitor with the bit line and that charge needs to be replaced. The number indicates the spee...

Re: New computer (SSD vs HDD)

If you want long life from a SSD drive avoid any that use NAND memory-flash chips, these can only be written a limited number of times.
Choose instead a drive sing DRAM technology, they cost a bit more but do not have the above limit.
