Nagrill or Lagrill of Camden
Nagrill or Lagrill of Camden
Found my got grandad on the 1921 census, his occupation was given as a marble polisher and his employer was either Nagrill or Lagrill of St Pauls Road, Camden. Can anyone help identify this business please.
Re: Nagrill or Lagrill of Camden
Thanks for reply. Have already tried these with no success
Re: Nagrill or Lagrill of Camden
Hi Carol
I suggest you post a screenshot of the part of the record that shows the name and address of the employer so that we can all have a look

Re: Nagrill or Lagrill of Camden
The first letter looks like an S to me.
Looks like the first letter in St Pauls.
Good luck

I haven't a subscription. So have you tried the name 'S L N' agrill in the local census. He may be a director of a monumental mason or a business which would tie in with your ancestor's occupation.
Re: Nagrill or Lagrill of Camden
Sorry I agave been busy elsewhere and haven’t returned to this query despite making the initial suggestions.
Just to stop anyone else searching, although I may have missed something of course, I have tried S,L, N and H in the 1911 census. I also found an online directory for 1921, Harris, and looked under marble and stone masons but there was no mention of anything like the names above.
I put the name in the 1921 census starting with each of the letters above and using a wild card but nothing came up.
There is a Camden Town History Society that may be able to help. Googling the name brings up nothing except the 1907 murder linked to St Pauls Road etc.

Hi, it also seems to me that it says Sagrill.
Have you tried searching through any newspaper archives for the business?
I have tried to search for it on Google, but unfortunately nothing is showing up.

Mention in case.
Using the 1921 free index, one or two people in the same line, marble polishers, were working at Art Pavements & Decorations.
They have multiple entries in the 1920 Post Office London Trades Directory.
i.e.
Marble Decorators
Art Pavements & Decorations Limited (The),
St. Paul's works, St. Paul's crescent NW1 & 51 Mortimer street W1
The Camden and Kentish Towns Directory, 1916-17, also has a listing for them in St. Paul's Road, at number 130.
Described as marble & mosaic tile manufacturers.
