I have come across a deserter in my tree. Edward Hill Born 1852 in Aylesham norfolk, deserted the Royal Horse Artillery on 5th March 1872 at Woolwich. What would have happened to him if he had been caught? I can't find him at all after this date if he wasn't caught would he have changed his name?

We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Re: desertion
I don't know if this is the same person but I found the following newspaper account
Sally
Re: desertion
As it was in 1872 he would at least just miss being stamped or tattooed with the letter "D" if caught. That was abolished in 1871.

Re: desertion
It's possible! It would help if he remained as Edward!
What about this chap, he has come out of nowhere!
1881 in Leeds, Edward Hallan, 30, Carter, born Norfolk Norwich
Married to Emma H

The marriage was in 1874, Edward Hallan + Emma Harriet Sharpe (at a Leeds Registered Building)
It gets better!
In 1891 census (where it appears to have the family name as Hallam), Edward is 40, born Reepham, Norfolk. A labourer

1901 in Leeds, Edward Hallan is 50, born Norfolk Rupham (a bit like 1871!)
Transcribed as Hallow on ancestry, piece 4218 folio 25 page 42

By 1911 Edward is widowed, still in Leeds.
Edward Hallan, 60, Recreation Club Steward, born Norfolk Hackford
He says he has had eight children, six are still living

Remembering that Edward Hill from Hackford/Reepham had a brother Robert and father was Charles, we saw that both of them had Warner as a middle name in the 1851 census.
There is no Edward Hallan born circa 1851 in Norfolk before the 1881 census as far as I can see. Names could mutate if course. But it looks promising?
But I am now struggling to find a death for Edward Hallan after 1911!
Re: desertion
Maybe this death?
Dec 1931 Leeds North 9b 402
Hallam, Edward
age 81
Buried at Beckett Street Cemetery, Leeds, in the unconsecrated portion, 9 Dec 1931. Age 81
Died 6 Dec.
But says he was a Dyer
He was a Ware mill Labourer in 1901, which might explain things (if I knew what a ware mill was!)

Re: desertion
