Old Palace School Bombing 80th Anniversary

Post by Chiddicks »

Yesterday was the 80th Anniversary of this tragic event.

This is one of the saddest and most tragic stories I have written about and what is still today, the Largest ever loss of life for the London Fire Brigade at one incident. This involves my Great Aunt, but it's also one of the research projects that I am probably most satisfied with.

Very interesting Paul: I noted that one of the Beckenham firemen who died lived in Mounthurst Road, Hayes - which is the road I grew up in until I was 10. I am glad to see they were all commemorated.

Thanks Paul, I have updated it further with additional info and pictures.

I am hopeful that by sharing this in as many places as possible that I might be able to trace further descendants of those that sadly lost their life that day.

The East London Advertiser ran a small article on this to commemorate the 80th Anniversary

I have built a new commemorative website dedicated to the memory of the 34 firefighters who died here. It's in its infancy but will be gradually populated over the coming months.

Thank you, I am hoping to eventually make contact with families of all those that sadly lost their lives, tall order, but hopefully I can reach out to as many as possible.

I have been slowly adding biographies of the 34 firefighters who died and slowly adding their stories and pictures. The last biography just published was
without a doubt, the toughest and most emotional story so far, that I have written about the 34 firefighters who lost their lives. I urge you to read this and not have a tear in your eye.

I have now completed 21 of the 34 stories of the brave men and women who lost their lives at the Old Palace School during the Blitz in WW2.
