GRO Change of Date Ranges for Births.

Post by Mick Loney »

You’ll be pleased to know that the GRO has extended the date ranges of its Birth registrations for searching.
They have added 1920 to 1934, and 2007 to 2019

Something else I forgot to mention, there is a relaxation in the spelling of the first forenames.
Search for Dor, and it will return anyone whose first name contains Dor, e.g. Doris, Doreen or Dorothy.
Search for Derick, and it will return Derick and Frederick
Search for D,it will find Adrienne, Dorothy, Enid and Madge.
Give it a try, it really works :D

NB This only seems to apply to first names though

The mothers maiden names will come up on there for 1921-1934 if you enter them in the search box. Find them on FreeBMD.
Seems a bit odd though. Why don't they just come up anyway?

The dash for mmn that usually denotes an illegitimate birth does show on the new entries without any prompting.

relevant bit?
"For modern birth indexes, the mother’s maiden name will only be included in the
returned index if it was already entered as part of the online search"

Sorry, my wording was poor :D I wasn’t referring to the initials MMN, but the initials used for 2nd and subsequent forenames.

On Freebmd, they often only show first forename in full, and initials for subsequent names.
The GRO however show all forenames in full, not initials. e.g Henry W Smith is shown as Henry Walter Smith
(I’ve even seen examples where 4 forenames have been shown in full!)
