Jesse Charles Quarterman

Post by Norfolk Nan »

Hi

This chap is missing from the 1901 census and I'd appreciate any help in finding him. He was born 1868 in Oxford, Oxon and may have been in that area in the early half of 1901. He married Jane Ellen Emma Hawkins in St Pancras, London in August 1901 and settled in Islington. I'm only looking for this census and as Quarterman can be a nightmare with transcription your eagle eyes would be helpful.

Thank you.

Hi there - thank you for looking. Yes, this is his first wife but he wasn't dead. They had married in Oxford in 1894 but the marriage ended. He has three sons with his second 'wife'. I know he's somewhere in 1901 but where???

Is the image for the 1901 marriage online? If so, what is his address and occupation on the record? It might provide a clue where he was several months earlier, in April 1901. Also, when did he die?

If you have his marriage certificate for 1901 then if his marriage was by banns then you should be able to take it back a few weeks to see where he was living. Of course he may have been serving with the British Army in South Africa in the Boer War.

Yes, that’s my chap. I think he may have died in 1909 but that’s not certain. I know Jane remarried in 1911 as a widow but that may have been a tall tale. I found Jane in Ludgate Hill, London, a domestic servant in the home of a vicar, but no sign of Jesse.

I did wonder about the Army, Thunder, but my initial search didn’t find anything to help with this idea. He might be in some other institution of course.
