Could this be James?

abode Hoe

MURCH, JAMES
Mother's Maiden Surname:
GRO Reference: 1841 M Quarter in SOUTHMOLTON Volume 10 Page 197

Marriage of the James in St George in the East, he does name a father, true or not
31 August 1862, St Jude Whitechapel
James Murch, 21, Bachelor, Waiter, residence 17½ Jane Street, father Samuel Murch, Farmer
+
Elizabeth Sugg

Presumably there must be a family connection between Frances Hucker nee Murch and the people at 33 Jane Street!
1841 census, Chittlehampton
piece 234 book 8 folio 10 page 14
Thomas Murch, Farmer, and Jenney Murch, both 50
Elizabeth Murch, 22, likely the lady who married William Fuke
Jane Murch, 20, mother of James?
James Murch, 6 months, is there.

We can see the BT of the baptism of Frances Murch here, it's nicely written!
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... -993K-F9ZR

A few years earlier, an older brother of Frances.
Baptism, 9 August 1789, Roborough
Thomas, Son of Thomas & Jane Murch

So he would be a perfect match on age for the Thomas who died in December 1841.
Frances Hucker then could be the aunt of Elizabeth Fuke (daughter of Thomas Murch), living at 33 Jane Street, St George in the East!

Hi Jonwarrn

Thank you so much for finding Frances in the 1851 census. I had tried all combinations that I could think of including just using her first name and Devon as a place of birth, but of course didn't find her!

Thank you also for finding 7 Berwick Street in the 1861 census. She is obviously not listed there at the time. Perhaps she was missed by the enumerator.

I am most grateful. The burial you found for Frances confirms that it is the Frances Murch I am looking for. Elizabeth Fuke was Frances' niece (daughter of Frances' brother Thomas), there is an Ann Horniblow at Jane Street in 1861 and she is also a niece of Frances (daughter of Frances' sister Margaret). Elizabeth Fuke's sister was Jane and she is the one who had James illegitimately.

I am so glad this forum exists because it is so useful on occasions to have another pair of eyes. Sometimes you just can't see the wood for the trees.

Thank you once again for your help xxx

For WoolieHE
I'm very late on the scene, finding this site quite by accident. but I can confirm the information you have amassed about Frances Hucker (nee Murch) is correct (she was born Roborough/Torrington. North Devon).

Thomas Murch is my 3x great grandfather. He married Jane Western at Winkleigh on 19th February 1787 after banns were read on 14th, 21st and 28th January 1787. Jane was baptised at Burrington North Devon 16th December 1765.

Frances was the 4th identified child of Thomas and Jane.
Their other children were - Elizabeth, Thomas, James, Jane, John (my 2x great grandfather). Margaret, Christan (girl), and William. I have copies of their baptism records. (they could be shared)

If you are interested the two eldest sons of Thomas and Jane's youngest child William establish the Murch Brothers Agricultural Engineers at Umberleigh, North Devon in 1880. It is still operational today.
