Any have any ideas for wife's name

Post by woodchal »

This is from the 1891 census

I have looked on adjacent pages to see if there are any clues from the handwriting on other names, but this has me stumped

Wife 1 Fanny died in 1885, I think its not a Fanny
Wife 3? Lily marries in 1898

Think this may be wife 2, but can't find out anything about her

Is it possible to have more examples of the writers style from the page. A first thought is Mrs Underwood.

Reasoning behind my thoughts on Mrs....The heavy underscore at the end of the christian name usually denotes a shortening of the name, i.e. Jas for James etc. In this case with the slope of the writing it's possibly a left handed person, and the back stroke of the S has been more pronounced than usual, ie pulling the nib, whereas pushing with your right hand was horrible, you'd tend to turn it on it's side and produce a finer line. Census compiled with information supplied by someone who didn't know her christian name, such as one of the boarders. Remember inkwells and nibs ? I do Watson. :)
