Brought to bed - baptisms

Post by VALLMO9 »

This is one of my favourite baptism records. Considering it's 423 years old, this record is nearly as informative as a post 1837 birth certificate. :D

Baptism date: 7 October 1599
Place: Tottenham
First name: John
Last name: -- (My note: I'm presuming it's Haddocke)
Birth date/age: delivered in bed at John Haddocke's house at Tottenham Street
Relationship: son
Occupation: Pedlar and glassman
Residence: Enfield; his wife from London

Here's more favourites, due to the vivid detail regarding the parent(s)' circumstances:

Baptism date: 19 Nov 1617
Place: Westerham, St Mary the Virgin
First name: Mary
Last name: Isaake
Notes: Daughter of a strange woman very lately come to be brought in bed in our parish whom they report to be the wife of John Isakke of Brenchley, a weaver. A bastard born in the house of Edmund Chapman of Canons.

Baptism date: 16 Dec 1737
Place: Westerham, St Mary the Virgin
First name: Samuel
Last name: Lewin
Mother's name: Elizabeth Cole
Notes: Married as she pretends to one Mr Lewin of Lewisham and brought to bed at James Cole's at Cockhamhill

Baptism date: 06 Nov 1814
Place: Sutton-At-Hone, St John the Baptist
First name: Sarah
Last name: Smith
Notes: The mother of the child was brought in bed on her road thro Sutton. The father died in Chelsea Hospital.

Baptism date: 14 July 1799
Place: Birkin, St Mary [Yorkshire]
First name: Harriet
Last name: Thompson
Mother's name: Sarah
Notes: Brought to bed at West Haddlesey, says she is a married woman and her home is Newcastle upon Tyne.

Baptism date: 17 May 1795
Place: Wittersham [Kent]
First name: William
Last name: Brazill
Notes: Travellers brought to bed in Wm Turk's barn - married at Hurstmonceux SSX

One 1723 baptism in Berkshire noted that the parents (both of Gloucester) were "foresd Mary EVANS going about the Country for work with her husband was brought to bed at Sparsholt". Obviously this record shows that some parents didn't necessarily hail from the county of their child's birth/baptism.
