Census record for Talitha

Post by woodchal »

I am interested in Talitha (Tabitha?) Milward (b1842, Church Broughton, Derbyshire, England).

She and her husband Aaron and son James have an interesting story. They married in 1869 but by 1871 census they were living apart. Aaron later went on to have a new partner, who he claims to be his wife.

Other researchers have Talitha and James (b1869) at New Rd. (by the Church) Littleover in the Census 1871 without a citation. I have been unable to locate this record. Aaron was elsewhere in Derby. Can anyone help locate this record

By the 1881 census James was with his paternal grandfather, Aaron was in Leeds with his new partner and Talitha cannot be located.

Talitha is in the 1891 and 1901 census on her own saying she’s a widow.

I have not found a death record for her yet.

Where is she in 1901? I see her in Staffs in 1891, but not 1901. Is her name mispelled? Also, there's a Tabitha Milward with an 1861 criminal record. In the April 1861 Derbyshire Times report, she's Talitha Milward (on bail) for stealing a quantity of apples, etc.

In 1901 it’s transcribed as Tlitfa Stoppard in Derby, by ancestry

There is a Tabetha Milward arriving in Canada in 1880 (Canada, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1865-1935) - did she go there? Is that why son James is with his paternal grandfather in 1881 census? I can’t find her in 1881 census. If so she was back by 1891 census.

In terms of the court case, it seems that she was acquitted - date of trial 9 Apr 1861. England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892
