Ancestry "hint"

Post by paulr1949 »

This one arrived today. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry, as he would have been 134 years old at the time of marriage :!:

That’s how this sort of rubbish ends up on peoples trees. ‘Ancestry said it, so it must be true’

While my initial reaction is similar, if I think about it, it might not be as stupid as you think.

Suppose the George Gill in the tree contained inconsistent dates and the match to the later stuff is actually good - something is wrong but couldn't it be the birth that's wrong?

Why should we always assume that our tree data is correct and the hint is wrong? Couldn't it be that the hint is trying to put us back on the correct track? Not always that easy to tell which is right and which is wrong. (I'm absolutely not saying that Paul's data is wrong - I'm trying to speak to the general case...)

You are right, of course, Adrian in the general sense as I could very easily have an error.

This particular one I am pretty sure is correct, with children at the "right" time and a possible burial in London in 1839 (where, I believe, he lived most of his life, and the "hint" George is from Market Harborough, Leics.) Mind you, there's a Yorkshire connection somewhere!
