Any Help Please

Post by Jedi »

Richard Northey Born: 3 Jul 1858 Germansweek, Devon. Died: 19 Jul 1919 Manor Cottage, Halwill, Devon.

His Mother is Jane Northey. See attached photo. The problem being is that I cant find info about Jane and her parents.

A friend told me that Jane Northey may be the wrong name, but that's what it shows on Richard’s birth certificate.

If the above Jane is correct then this appears to be her history but needs to be verified. The best source is FMP but can also be found on Ancestry

NB surname spelt Northy or Northey

Possible marriage for Jane’s parents John Northy and Mary Jones 13 Mar 1808
Mary appears to have died in 1840. She does not appear on any census records
1841 census John is living at Henerd Jeffard Germansweek with children Thomas, James, Samuel, Betsy and Jane. John is a Farmer
1851 census John is living at Hennard Jeffreys with children Thomas and Jane. John is a Farmer of 70 acres.
1861 census Jane is a servant living with her sister Betsy and Family at West Wortha. Jane’s son Thomas is not with them
1864 Jane married widower Henry Pengelly

Not sure if this is related, but there's a Jane Northey mentioned in the Tavistock Gazette (dated 30 May 1862).
Partial text: "Jane Northey, another neighbour, gave corroborative evidence, and stated that on going to the house of prisoner's father about a month ..."

1851 census: Jane (age 15) is with mum Frances (age 55) and sister Betsey (age 22) in Germansweek. Frances is described as "Pauper". Betsey's occupation is "Formerly Servant Now Home".

I think Frances died before 1871, so this might be daughter Jane:

1871 census
Name Jane Northy
Age 34
Birth Year (Estimated) 1837
Birthplace Great Weeke, Devon (probably Germansweek)
Marital Status Unknown
Occupation Domestic Servant
Event Place Germansweek, Devon

And this might be son Richard:

1871 census
Name Richard Northey
Age 13
Birth Year (Estimated) 1858
Birthplace Germansweek, Devonshire
Occupation Cow Boy
Event Place Bratton Clovelly, Devon (the district appearing on your Richard's birth certificate)

Northy/Northey is a very popular durname in the area.

It is just a case of following both Families through until hopefully something disproves one Family or the other.
